Kristínartindar are mountains north of Skaftafellsheiði in the Skaftafell area in the southern part of Vatnajökull National Park. The circular route is 17,9 km with a 1215m elevation. The hike takes around 6-8 hours, a level considered difficult and only for experienced hikers. The highest peak is 1118m high.
We recommend this hike when the weather and visibility is good. The views on this hike are absolutely stunning, some of which include a glimpse over the mountains in Öræfi, the southern part of Vatnajökull glacier, several glacier tongues, and the Skeiðarársandur beach.
Information about the hike
The starting point for Kristínartindar, as with most of the hikes in Skaftafell, is in front of Skaftafell Visitor Center. The path is mostly marked, except for the top part along the peaks. We recommend starting towards Sjónarnípa – Gláma – up to the ridge. On this path you have the best views over Vatnajökull, the outlet glacier Skaftafellsjökull, and the surrounding mountains. However, it is possible to go the opposite direction, which is the first choice by the National Park.
We recommend being extremely careful on the way to the north peak. The trail to the summit is quite steep, and may not be for all hikers.
As this excursion is for experienced hikers, we also recommend doing a thorough pack check, ensuring you have plenty of food and water for the journey. If you are in a small group, at least one first aid kit should be available. If you are prepared for an adventure, this hike is an unforgettable experience!
